As the not-employed spouse of a couple, I bear the brunt of our childcare needs during the week. Even more so now. So, I definitely look forward to the weekends when I can take a backseat. I've tasked Davis with making breakfast on Saturday mornings so that I can write, which feels very decadent. As is enjoying my mug of tea in one sitting, instead of taking hurried sips of increasingly cool tea in between getting things done.
We had some cold rainy, snowy weather come in this past week, which presented a perfect opportunity to put some more seeds in the ground. The day before the snow, Willa and I planted a baby carrot variety, parsley, dill, cilantro, kale, and red beets. Working together in concentration, I felt our spirits commune. I have never experienced so acutely the pleasures of being patient. It also helps to buy pelleted seeds. They are little more pricey but, the coating makes the teensy-weensiest seeds much easier for toddler eyes to see and hands to handle. We’ve also had our first meal supplemented by the garden- spinach in omelettes with mushrooms, and feta.
I survey the changes in the garden that the spring weather has wrought and marvel at the new leaves on the blackberry and raspberry canes, tender mint emerging from the tangle of last year's wintered growth, feathery foliage of yarrow qui poussent (such a great French word), and the hardy stalks of garlic that we planted last fall. Despite all that is going on in the world at large right now, I see miracles.
